To All Moms, Dads, and Kids:
We are putting together a really neat day of baseball, community and fun
at the University of Maryland’s baseball facility on Sunday, July 10. The event
is part of the 2011 Potter Baseball Tour which will travel to 30 towns over the
summer. The tour is comprised of a team of teenage boys who travel from town to
town, not only playing a lot of fun baseball, but doing their best to bring back
the feel of community by bringing people together to celebrate the game of
baseball, and incorporate lots of other fun events for people of all ages.
Festivities will start at 8:00 in the morning and go until 10:00 at night
with plenty to keep everyone busy and having fun.
The day starts at 8:00 with a bunch of kids from the ages of 10-13
participating in a 6-person “Potter’s Fun Competition”. The players will
participate from 8:30 10:30 in physical and “mental “team work competitions.
What are these competitions? Well, that’s part of the fun…they (players) will
not know what they are competing in until they get there that day. They will be
given instructions, and very little time to get together as a team and figure it
out. A competition you have never seen before. The first eight teams to sign up
will participate in the competition. Players can sign up as teams or
individuals, and your team can have as many players as you would like, but only
six can compete in any of the competitions. If you sign up as an individual, we
will place you on a team. You are considered officially signed up when you
purchase your $5.00 ticket to get into the facility. There is no additional
charge for this competition, and prizes will be given out to the winning team.
While this competition is still going on, yoga will start. James Foulkes
will try to out do what he did last year when he had 80 or so people (from 7-70)
bend, stretch, chant, and sweat for about 60 minutes. James teaches yoga
throughout the world and he is excited about coming back to work with you…
Back out on the field, once the 6-player team competition ends, the youth
baseball clinic will begin. Kids and parents can start signing up at 9:30 with
the clinic actually starting at 11:00.
Kids of all ages (up to 14) are welcome to participate in the clinic
which will be put on by area baseball coaches and the Potter Tour Team. There is
no charge for the clinic. Fruit will be available for FREE…players are welcome
to bring their own drinks, although water, soda, and Gatorade will be available
for sale
Once the clinic finishes, it is time for the “Challenger Game”. This was
the favorite of most of our players last year as they had an opportunity to help
the participants compete in this game. We are happy to have two groups who
played last year returning. These are individuals with special needs and this
was a very rewarding experience for all. We will once again have the League of
Dreams group, along with our players from Anne Arundel County. We encourage
other people in attendance to come down from the stands and get involved in the
game from the sidelines.
During this game, Erik Bakich, the head baseball coach of the
University of Maryland, will take anyone and everyone on a tour of the facility,
and talk about the UM baseball program and future projects to improve the
Stadium. Coach Bakich will also be available after the tour to talk to parents,
coaches and players.
Next up…alumni baseball game versus the present UM club baseball team. It
should be exciting and fun. Talk to all of your friends, family, co-workers, etc
who played baseball at Maryland.
Sign up early and come out and play some baseball at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
We will also need some bat boys for this game, so another way for the kids to
get involved.
After the game, all of the sluggers” will give their best effort in a
home run hitting contest. We will have some present UM players, past UM players,
other local college summer players, and any other “all-stars” compete in the
home run derby. We will make sure that we mix in a few younger kids to do their
best.
The end of the festivities for the day will be the tour game, which will
pit the Potter tour team against a group of individuals from local baseball
organizations. This game will be a nine inning wood bat game, and will include
the singing of the national anthem, music and games between innings, announcing
of the game, podcasting of the game, and prizes to some lucky patrons.
Food will be served all day, which will include hamburgers, hot dogs,
”walking tacos”, drinks, chips, popcorn, sno-cones, candy and more.
Not only do we want you out to take in the game, we want you involved.
Volunteer to be a bat boy, ball boy, umpire a game, announce a game, sing the
national anthem, announce the podcasting of the tour game, flip some burgers, or
get involved in some other way.
